Gerard Noonan
President, Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST)
Noonan, the long-standing chair of the industry superannuation fund Media Super, is a
journalist with more than 30 years’ experience at the highest levels of Australian media.
For more than two decades he has been an activist in establishing a major role for the
not-for-profit sector in Australia’s $1.2 trillion pension fund industry.
A former Trustee of the Year at the Conference of Major Super Funds, Noonan is president
of the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees. AIST represents trustees in the
“all profits to members” superannuation sector, covering more than 70 funds
with member assets of $450 billion.
He was also recently elected president of the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors (ACSI).
Noonan is a former senior writer at the metropolitan broadsheet newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald
and was editor of The Australian Financial Review for five years into the early 1990s. He was awarded
the Walkley Award for outstanding contribution to journalism in 2008, the ultimate accolade in
Australian journalism.
Noonan was appointed to the board of the Federal Government’s advisory body, Innovation Australia,
in 2009 and chairs IA’s venture capital committee. He is also a member of the board of the Foundation
for Public Interest Journalism and is a journalist member of the Australian Press Council.
